​As the song says “All my bags are packed, I’m ready to go”. But not sure if the rest of that song rings true in this case. 

I leave Saturday around dinner time to Atlanta, then on a silver bird to Madrid Spain. Direct flight. 

I have enclosed photos of what I will have with me for the Camino portion of this adventure. Basically a backpack weighing 12 lbs loaded. The orange blob is my sleeping bag. Borrowed from a dear female friend who did the full Camino 10 years ago. Thank you Linda

I don’t think I will be mistaken for a “Camigas”. Lol

    Congratulations! That should be an amazing hike! A 12 pound pack? Hmmmm….

      Hey Gary! the nice thing about the camino is every night you stay where they feed you, you can wash your clothes, and sleep on a cot. All that allows for a lighter pack than AT or PCT hikers

    Looks good, Gary! You won't look like a "Camiga" and I think it is in the spirit of pilgrimage to use equipment that was used by a previous pilgrim!

 May 5th 2026 On May 16th, I leave for Madrid, Spain to begin my journey on the last part of the Camino Frances from Sarria to Santiago de Compostela. My son Gary will be joining me for the pilgrimage walk. It is just the last 116km (60 miles). I have a couple of places on the Camino to visit before reaching Sarria, which I will notate. The real pilgrimage for us starts in Sarria. After the Camino, Gary goes back home, and I am meeting Mary Ann, (who will have been in Florence, Italy) in San Sebastian, Spain for two nights.  Then off to France, where Jessica now lives near Grenoble and then Scotland (10 days)and lastly but not least Ireland (9 days). One last hurrah in Europe. Or so we think.

Camino Background

 The Camino Frances is an ancient pilgrimage from France, over the Pyrenees, Across the top of Spain ending in the town of Santiago de Compostela in the Northwest of Spain. Pilgrims have walked this route for centuries for religious and other reasons. It is lined with small villages where the pilgrims can rest for the night and have nourishment.  Today it is all these things as well as a tourist adventure. Hostels and small hotels line the route so that people of all faiths and physical ability can walk The Way. I will only be waking the last 116 kilometers starting in the town of Sarria and ending in Santiago de Compostela. It should take me about 9 days walking at a leisurely pace. Though this portion of the Camino is fairly flat, it does mean getting up everyday and walking and walking and walking. Rest and then get up and do it again the next day. Should the pace prove too much, there are buses and taxis available to take one to the next rest stop. I hope to not have to do...
