June 1st Monday San Sebastián







Well it is June 1st and only 2 days left in Spain. First order of business is to go out and get some beer for the room. These three photos show the route I took. One crossing the bridge, one of a man washing his feet and the other of a man rowing on the river. I also picked up 2 croissants for breakfast. 




Then off to old town San Sebastián and enjoy its flavors once again. Mary Ann recognized it immediately but it took me some minutes to get re acclimated .  So what to do?  Sit outside in a cafe and have something to eat and drink.

 In the background you can see a demonstration going on. Not sure about what  and then off to the market. Now I know things change, but imagine my surprise when after going down the escalator, I see a few butchers that were there last time but in the center is a Lydl’s supermarket.

And then all the fish market roped off and closed .


But when I asked a lady there she said it was only because it was Monday. They would be open tomorrow. What a relief .

Above ground things were normal with lots of produce for sale.


After the market scare, we went walking to find the foie gras cafe Linda had taken us to in 2018.  It seems life on the streets of San Sebastián has not changed.

And along the way, we stopped into a church we had visited in 2018 and Mary Ann lit candles for Cheryl and her family.  It really is a hidden gem of a church


And of course we found the foie gras cafe, but being Monday it was closed till 7:00 pm. Maybe tomorrow.

After this we got on bus 28 to go back to our hotel.  Well finally after a half hour the driver asked us where we were going. I showed him on a map and we had missed the stop 20 minutes ago  we stayed on and got off at the correct stop.  In hotel, but I had post cards to mail. 20 minutes later, cards were mailed and I was back asleep at the hotel  


We ate at a place that looked nice near our hotel, but it turned out to be below average.   the drinks were good but the steaks came out cold inside. Very Spanish. A short walk home and fell right to sleep.

 May 5th 2026 On May 16th, I leave for Madrid, Spain to begin my journey on the last part of the Camino Frances from Sarria to Santiago de Compostela. My son Gary will be joining me for the pilgrimage walk. It is just the last 116km (60 miles). I have a couple of places on the Camino to visit before reaching Sarria, which I will notate. The real pilgrimage for us starts in Sarria. After the Camino, Gary goes back home, and I am meeting Mary Ann, (who will have been in Florence, Italy) in San Sebastian, Spain for two nights.  Then off to France, where Jessica now lives near Grenoble and then Scotland (10 days)and lastly but not least Ireland (9 days). One last hurrah in Europe. Or so we think.

May 26th Tuesday

 Well the day started quiet enough walking the Camino. That means a hugh uphill walk and very few places to stop for drinks. By now I am forwarding most of my stuff and only using a very small light backpack. Thank you Linda.  After about 9 of the 12 miles for that day ( And who is counting) I began to feel like I was drunk and attributed it to a combo of beer and pain killers. I guess other hikers did not. There are not a lot of places to sit and rest on this portion of the Camino. So when I sat in one spot a bunch of ladies asked if I was OK. Of course I gave them my standard reply. Just “old and slow”. They tried to help me walk further but I was not steady on my feet. So I sat down again Me sitting Feeling fine. They insisted on calling an ambulance and I didn’t have much choice as this one lady had taken charge Ambulance coming to get me.  My ambulance companion Riding in the ambulance.  In the hospital for testing. EKG, blood sugar, BP, pulse. The whole works. ...

May 11th

​As the song says “All my bags are packed, I’m ready to go”. But not sure if the rest of that song rings true in this case.  I leave Saturday around dinner time to Atlanta, then on a silver bird to Madrid Spain. Direct flight.  I have enclosed photos of what I will have with me for the Camino portion of this adventure. Basically a backpack weighing 12 lbs loaded. The orange blob is my sleeping bag. Borrowed from a dear female friend who did the full Camino 10 years ago. Thank you Linda I don’t think I will be mistaken for a “Camigas”. Lol
