June 23rd Aultguish Inn

Well what was supposed to be a short travel day of course turned into a long one. The highway from Broadford to the Aultguish Inn turned into one lane track in places along with construction that went to 1 lane with lights starting and stopping traffic. But the scenery was very nice.

Tried to see a village someone mentioned had Coos running through it but it turned out to not be true and took us over another mountain and on one track roads.

But we got to the Inn around noon and were told to come back at 4:00 pm. They say a half hour trip up the road would take us to Ullapool where we could walk around and eat. You see the Aultguish Inn is really out in the country. It has been here for over 400 years serving as a way station for cattle drivers and horse drawn carriages navigating the rough northern routes  Gaelic for burning pine, this area was once heavily forested.

The front of the Inn

The Inn is in the middle of this photo taken from the dam above it.

Outhouse we had to use before the room was ready.

So off we went to Ullapool. It is a lovely town on the Atlantic ocean next to Lewis Island and has a ferry that goes back and forth to Lewis Island. We did not have time for that

The shops and houses that face the bay.

The bay with sailboats and mermaids.

Could be the Sea Gem in its better days

The harbor from where we ate lunch. Nothing special just to tide us over before supper.

Part of a hull of an old wooden ship they are rebuilding .

The shops looking the other way towards the mountains

So we lingered over lunch as long as we could and still had time before checkin. So what to do? Go down a back road.

Stone walled one lane road leading to….

A small farm house with a church.

A house above the church

Great stone walls all over Scotland.

On the way back we make two other stops. One for Mary Ann to see the shrubs with yellow flowers that are everywhere on the meadows of Scotland.

And the second for me to walk the dam above the inn. Boy was the wind ever blowing then.

Gave my hat to Mary Ann so it would not blow off.

We get checked on, have a drink and Mary Ann heads off for a nap while I do the blog at the bar.

Dinner at the Inn was very very nice. So good I didn’t take photos till part way through. Sorry if you think it gross. Balmoral chicken with haggis inside and wrapped in bacon.

And for dessert. One more sticky toffee pudding bites the dust.

View out our window at the Inn.

Good night.
